Lumpiang Shanghai

June 4, 2010

Just a short trivia, Lumpiang Shanghai did not originate in Shanghai China. If you go there and if you try to look for one, you’ll get frustrated because Lumpiang Shanghai came from the Philippines. That goes the same with the Shanghai Fried Rice.  This lumpia or spring rolls has been in our culture since time in memorial and it has been associated with us being a Filipino.  This heaven sent spring roll can be found everywhere in our country.  We have different varieties of spring rolls. Here are the samples: lumpiang gulay, lumpiang baboy, Lumpia sa Ubod, Lumpiang Saging (Turon pala yon), Lumpiang Hubad and of course, Lumpiang Shanghai.

For this entry, there is this Chinese Restaurant that serves this directly from their kitchen. You will see that there were signs of crackling and steaming when they put it on your table. The taste was very sumptuous even my kids did like it. Lumpiang Shanghai is not complete without the sweet and sour sauce. It also went well with the concoction of chili garlic with soy and kalamansi.

Where to Find

This is the Lumpiang Shanghai at King Bee. King Bee is located along Marcos Highway, near Masinag, Antipolo City. If you happened to crave for Lumpia and you are at the vicinity, try to drop by and experience the Lumpiang Shanghai that I am boasting about.

Lumpiang Shanghai

December 26, 2008

I was carried away by this small but truly a food sent from heaven.  It is one of my favorite comfort food which can be bought at any place and definitely available in every corner of the Philippines.  Just a trivia, Lumpiang Shanghai did not originate in Shanghai, China neither is available at that place.  It is truly, 100% Filipino Creation. Thanks to the Chinese who went here and introduced the spring roll.  It evolved to fit the Filipino taste buds and from there, “Lumpiang Shanghai” was born. It is usually served with sweet and sour sauce.  Did you know that aside from the Lechon that is served every occasion, Lumpinang Shanghai is the next popular main dish? Well, that is why I give all my praises to this humble viand but very popular and truly a heaven sent.

Where to Find

It is available at every occasion all around the country. What if your craving came up and there is no occasion? Here are few locations which I may suggest makes one of the most delicious Lumpiang Shanghai all year round.  Tacloban City, along T. Claudio st. in-front of Sacred Heart College.  It is only available during school days.  Another on is at Mandaluyong City.  It is located along Boni st. cor. Sikap st.  The name of the restaurant is UWA.  It is across the street from the famous Club Muah.  Lumpiang Shanghai is available before lunch up to the time they closes.  Most of the people come to this place to order.  You may also call 4906829 for bulk orders.  From my interview, they are making 600 to 1000 pieces daily excluding the bulk orders they are receiving.  The more you taste, the more you crave.  Sweet and Sour sauce will compliment but for me, plain tomato catchup will bring me to trance. Rapsa talaga.!!!
