Ginataang Bilo-Bilo

July 29, 2009

In the office, the 15 minutes coffee break is a corporate way of saying, “meriendahan na!!!”  Merienda or eating in between full meals is a part of our food culture and one of the known merienda food is Ginataang Bilo-Bilo.  This is a hot sticky soup composed of sweet potatoes, coconut milk, rice gluten, sago (gelatinous beads), sweet bananas and jackfruit. My preference is eating this is during the rainy season.  In the Visayas, they call this binignit.  There is also a version in Bicol region that I tasted where ginger was added.  No matter what they call, or what they add, this is a dish has survived generations of great meriendas and siestas across the country.  This is an authentic pinoy merienda food.

Where to find

For this, I was able to have this along Siete Media st. The Landmark is near the intersection of Sumulong highway cor. Siete Media st., Antipolo City.  It is only available every 3:00pm up 5:00pm. After 5:00pm, you’ll be lucky if there is still an available ginataan in her improvised store.  For those who are in the mall, this is available at Pocinana’s Kitchen.  Always remember this, eating ginataan Bilo-bilo is perfect for your merienda specially when it’s raining.

Paraludos at Inangit

March 30, 2009

Ginataan has been a traditional merienda and has a lot of versions.  There is one in Bicol that I tasted that is a little bit spicy because it is cooked with ginger.  In the Visayas it is called Binignit and I tasted one that was served cold.   In Nueva Ecija, ginataan is called Paraludos and this is served with Inangit or sticky rice. I was brought by my friend in this restaurant in Greenhills called Ponciana’s Kitchen that serves this familiar dish.  According to him, it is eaten in Nueva Ecija with the sticky rice soaked in the coconut milk soup.  Yummy!!! It was my first time to try this and it is not hard to find because it is available in Greehills shopping center.

Where to Find

Aside from Nueva Ecija where you can find this, it is also available here in the Metro at Ponciana’s Kitchen.  Not only do they serve delicious, papaitan, but they also serve this Paraludos with Inangit.   Ponciana’s Kitchen is located at Greenhills at the back of the Greenhills theater.  It is along the fast food chain.  When in Greenhills, never forget to drop by Ponciana’s for you to experience the Nueva Ecijan way of ginataan that is call Paraludos. And it best served with Inangit.
