Tuba

January 21, 2009

You can find the finest coconut wine or called Tuba in Leyte, Eastern Visayas.  They have perfected the craft of aging and this fine wine is always available every time there is an occasion.  There is also what they called Bahalina which is aged to perfection. You can only call it Bahalina or Bahal if it aged up to a year.  Bahalina smells like “saba” or steamed banana and the wine has already a distinctive spark similar to an aged red wine.  Ones you taste, it is very much of a fine red, smooth and strong.

 Where to find

One of the best Tuba that I tasted came form Babatngon, Leyte and aged in the heart of the city of Tacloban (I also appreciate Tuba from Palo).   Our Family friend Lea Lee-Dudan and his father Tito Meng has been aging Tuba for more than 10 years in their wine cellar at M.H. Del Pilar st. at Leo’s Lodge building.  They age it for 3 years before it is ready for bottling.  They also have Tuba aged for more than 5 years but i guess that is for their personal consumption.  I got my bottles last 2004 and it will be opened at the right time. Vintage as it is, the better it will be.  You may contact them at 053-3213033 to have a taste of their finest wine.  Marasa hin-duro iton Tuba!!!

Hi Do. Ang mga magaling ay ang mga taga Leyte for creating this wine that I truly like. Happy Chinese New Year too.

Dali - my high school classmate in Tacloban wrote to me about OctubaFest 2008 which was a roaring success. The 5 year old tuba was gone in a few hours. Let’s promote tuba as a health drink (in moderation though).
